Keynote: Building Supercomputers from Mobile Processors

Microprocessors took the supercomputer market from vector computers because they are cheaper and more energy efficient. We may be about to see how mobile processors take the server and supercomputer market from microprcoessors for the very same reasons: they are cheaper and more energy efficient. This talk will describe the possibilities and challenges involved in developing a high performance computing platform from low cost and energy efficient mobile processors and commodity components.

Alex RamirezAlex Ramirez is an associated professor in the Computer Architecture Department at the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, and leader of the Heterogeneous Architectures group at BSC. He has a BSc (‘95), MSc (‘97) and PhD (‘02, received the UPC extraordinary award for the best PhD in computer science) in Computer Science from the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona, Spain. He had been a summer student intern with Compaq’s WRL in Palo Alto, California (‘99-’00), and with Intel’s Microprocessor Research Laboratory in Santa Clara (‘01).
